Cats are famously indifferent to their water bowl. Owners refill it daily, watch it go untouched, and assume the cat simply does not need much. The reality is more complicated, and it explains why hydration is one of the most discussed topics in feline health.

An Evolutionary Hangover

The domestic cat descends from desert-dwelling ancestors that obtained almost all their water from prey. A mouse is roughly seventy percent water, which meant a wild cat rarely needed to drink at all. Their thirst drive evolved to be weak because it did not need to be strong.

That worked well for an animal eating fresh prey. It works badly for an animal eating dry kibble containing around ten percent moisture. The cat does not compensate by drinking more, because the biological signal telling it to do so is simply not very loud.

What Low Intake Actually Causes

Chronic mild dehydration is not dramatic, which is why it goes unnoticed. Over years, however, veterinarians commonly associate it with several conditions:

  • Concentrated urine, which is a factor in urinary crystals and blockages
  • Increased strain on kidney function over the long term
  • Constipation, particularly in older or less active cats
  • Reduced ability to cope with illness or hot weather

None of these are guaranteed outcomes, and no single change prevents them. But encouraging higher water intake is one of the few genuinely low-cost interventions available to owners, and most vets recommend it.

Why the Bowl Is Part of the Problem

Several features of a standard water bowl actively discourage drinking.

  • Still water tastes flat because it loses dissolved oxygen within hours
  • Dust, hair and food particles accumulate on the surface
  • Narrow bowls press against whiskers, which many cats dislike
  • Water placed beside food picks up odour and is often rejected
  • Still water in a warm room grows bacteria and develops a film

Cats have a considerably more sensitive sense of taste for water quality than people assume. Water that seems fine to us can read as stale to them.

Why Moving Water Changes Behaviour

In the wild, still water is more likely to be contaminated than running water. Cats appear to retain a preference for a moving source, which is why so many drink from taps, shower trays and watering cans while ignoring the bowl six feet away.

Know What to Watch For

Sudden changes in drinking matter more than the absolute amount. A cat that starts drinking dramatically more than usual should be seen by a vet, since increased thirst is an early sign of several conditions including kidney disease, diabetes and hyperthyroidism. Encouraging hydration is sensible; ignoring a behavioural change is not.
